Shocker Toys Shockini Review
By Neil Beedie
There are several very solid mini-figure companies around at the moment all competing with great licenses. Shocker Toys is a small company that features only one product, their shockini’s. Shockini’s are 3” tall super articulated block figures.
They’ve got some great licenses and several new body types on the way as I’m informed. They have four different shockini types; Electrobytes which are Shockini’s in the form of robots, licensed shockini’s featuring the likeness of comic characters from Arcana Studio, AC Comics, Blue Water Productions and Toxic Avenger with other licensed properties in the works. There’s also their Custom shockini’s which are blank shockini’s that can be used to customise your own character and lastly themed shockini’s, which are much like the custom shockini’s but feature different accessories that all relate to a specific theme.
For this review I’ll be looking at a Custom Female shockini and an Electrobyte.
Packaging 4/5
The Shockini’s are presented in a clamshell pack featuring the shockini and all its accessories around it. The back show the rest of the shockini line and with the Electrobyte, has a small story on how they came to be and their mission. Each Electrobyte comes with a continuing comic about them.
Sculpting 4/5
Because these figures are all sculpt I’ll be including the head and body sculpt as one section.
These mini-figures are made in block form, helping the extensive number of articulation points.
Custom- Because they’re in block form it makes it easier to paint and customise and the shape works very well. They’re made from a soft plastic which also works well for a customiser and is easily carved and sanded. The main difference in this custom is that it’s the female version and has a chest.
Electrobyte- The Electrobyte is much the same in sculpt but the chest in slightly different. The head is sculpted to be robotic and has a visor and futuristic look.
The main problem with the shockini’s is that because they’re made of a soft plastic for customising as such, they are very prone to breakage and I had one of my arm ball sockets snap off, so watch out for that.
Paint 4/5
The custom shockini comes in plain white allowing the customiser to do as he wills to the figure. They also come in prime green, red, blue, yellow, black and tan.
The Electrobyte paint ops are the best you could expect from such a small figure. It’s executed cleanly and are very few problems. The only problem for me with the Electrobyte was at the back where the paint didn’t match up with the black outline and in a few minor areas.
Articulation 5/5
These little guys may be small, but they’re kicking it with articulation. Although they’re only 3” inches high they feature 18 points of articulation and be put into nearly any position. They’re articulated in the neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. Nearly all joints are ball jointed for maximum pose-ability.
Accessories 4/5
My custom shockini came with 5 accessories, a gun, sword, binoculars, rod, extra block and a display base. All are simple and sculpted very well. All the accessories fit very well into the Shockini’s hands except for the sword. This was one I had trouble with. I don’t know if I got a bad one but it just wouldn’t fit in. All ball jointed parts can be popped off and replaced with the weapons with ball joints or you can just disassemble him, whatever you want, it’s that easy. Although the Electrobyte didn’t come with any accessories they both came with a sheet of I think 50 various stickers to stick onto your shockini and customise.
Design 4/5
As there isn’t really an outfit or such for these figures I’ll be writing about the design. As I’ve said above these mini figures are in block form. This helps the articulation which it is primarily intended for and it also works well for such a small figure. This also helps for customiser as it is easer to paint and can be executed cleanly. As I’ve been told, Shocker Toys also plan on making some different body types such as the thin body, fat body and kid’s body type for all possibilities.
Overall 7/10
Overall, these are great little figures. With the amazing articulation and customisable possibilities you can’t go wrong. The clean packaging and accessories really strengthens the shockini’s value and helps it go that bit further. Although they didn’t excel in every area they are definitely a strong line.
Because they break relatively easily due to the plastic, you’ll need to be very careful with them. And if you’re into customising, these guys are definitely something you should try out. I can’t wait to see how they strengthen as a toy company and see more of their products in the future.
