Name:Kyle Moriwaki

Location:Larchmont , NY

1- What is it that you collect?
Anything that’s awesome. Japanese Figures, New Robots and Vintage Robots, Bootleg toys, Spawn, Cartoonish stuff, etc…

2- What was it that brought you to collecting? And what is that keeps you going?
My dad used to buy me really neat toys when I was young: Godzilla, Dinosaurs, Ultramen, etc… but now I don’t have much space in my room so I try and lay off buying a lot. But every now and then I become obsessed and go nuts buying stuff.

3- When did you start collecting?
Well I have a lot of stuff in my collection now that is from when I was around 3 years old, but I really started collecting when Todd McFarlane came out with the first series of Spawn.

4- Why (what you collect) example:Batman, Star Wars, Transformers, etc…?
Japanese toys are the best, I love cartoons, and robots are neato.

5- When did you start displaying them?
When I lived in Miami I started displaying around the age of, ummm…10? Maybe 12?

6- How do you get your inspiration to organize and display your collection?
I get inspired to organize my collection by looking at other people’s collections. They have to be really good ones though. I especially like ones with Godzilla’s in them.

7- Do you have a favorite character(s) you collect?
Godzilla.

8- Which item in your collection would you say is your absolute favorite and why?
Well it changes every now and then. I’m totally digging my new Kamen Riders I bought recently in Japan. I also bought some Masked Rider figures and an awesome 50 th Anniversary Godzilla made out of resin. The stores there were like a dream come true.

9- Which item was the most difficult to obtain? And which one is your prized possession?
There is a character named “Troll” in Youngblood. When Todd McFarlane’s first series of this came out I bought them all except Troll for some reason, and a month later I couldn’t find him anywhere. I kinda forgot about it for a while then about a year ago I spotted him in an ON SALE box in some random store in nyc for like 5 bucks. I’m really glad I had 5 bucks. So I keep him in the box and have him hanging on the wall. My most prized possession is a 14-inch Kamen Rider Black figure. I’ve always had a smaller version that I thought was so awesome looking and I wished I could have a bigger version. Then Banpresto came out with a series of huge Kamen Rider figures so I bought a bunch. Definitely a special find.

10- What is the oldest item you own? and the one with the most value?
Oldest: 12” Toys R Us Godzilla from like the early 80s. I have some vintage robots, but I bought those more recently on Ebay.

Most Value: Well the most expensive was the 50 th Anniversary Godzilla.

11- What inspires you to purchase an item to add to your collection?
Now it all starts with Ebay. Damn that site!!!

12- Customizing figures and statues has become very big, have you ever purchased a custom figure or statue and have you ever tried making one?
I’ve made sculptures before of like crazy figures and faces. Does that count?

13- What do you think of the custom Craze?
I didn’t really know there was a craze. Sounds cool though, and the customs on this site look great!

14- Where do you make most of your purchases from? ebay seems to be a favorite with collectors these days, are you an ebayholic?
Totally Ebay. I think it’s a great way to collect. But then again, finding a toy that you have always wanted at an old fashioned garage sale is always the most satisfying.

15- Is your collection insured?
Are you kidding? Of course.

16- What is missing from your collection that you hope to one day acquire?
The actual costume from the movie “Godzilla 1985”.

17- What is the usual reaction when people see your collection?
No one really says anything. And I’m not sure what to do, because I don’t know if they’re thinking “Oh cool” or “Jeez what a dork”. I don’t care though, I love my toys and I don’t care what anyone thinks.

18- Do you attend conventions for some of your purchases? Could you tell us about that?
No, no conventions.

19- Most collectors today go on what they call a toy run, do you participate in that as well? And what are your favorite spots? Do you have a routine?
Right next to college, in NYC, there is a line of wholesale stores that store old toy robots in the back where no one goes. But I discovered them! And now the guys who work there know me well so they let me buy 1 of each. I used to go every week, but now I try and stop by once every 2 months or so just to see if I missed anything.

20- How do you decide what to take out of the package and what stays sealed?
Bootlegs stay in the packages and are hung on the wall. I do this because the packaging designs are usually half the fun. The graphics and Text are so wacky!!

21- At what stage do you think your collection will be at 10 years from now, do you think you would have grown tired of it?
No, I can’t ever see myself growing tired of toys. But I will definitely come to the point where I’ll slow down the buying a lot. I’ve already started.

22- What advice would you give someone who just started a collection?
Advice: Ebay, and Rummage sales. Don’t just collect toys, love them too… love them
