NECA House of 1000 Corpses Series 1 review
By Don of the Dead
Rob Zombies "House of 1000 Corpses" is the horror movie that almost wasn't, blasted by MPAA for its violence and gore and shuffled between several Movie Studios before finally being distributed by Lions Gate Films, being sneaky and not wanting to wait I actually got a bootleg of this film months before it hit theaters and fell in love with it.
The story is a homage to 70's horror and follows 4 friends on a road trip across the country stop by Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen (Try their tasty fried chicken!) Upon learning the legend of Dr. Satan the friends go investigating the spot where he was supposedly hung by a mob, one flat tire later they find themselves in the hands of the sadistic Firefly family. NECA has now given us series 1 of the House of 1000 Corpses figures Otis, Dr. Satan, and All American Capt. Spaulding. NECA will follow up in August with series 2 based on the sequel "The Devils Rejects"

Woooah! He was dead when I got here! |
Packaging: 7/10
Typical clamshell with a good view of the figure and accessories for carded collectors. My only drawback being an opener is the amount of twist ties used. I know it is to keep the figure in place to avoid damage, but it should not take me 5 minutes to get a figure out of a package.
Head Sculpt
Otis: 7/10
Not bad, the hair is a little flimsy and the glued on sideburns look a little goofy, but the face is dead on. A psychotic soulless killer to the core, Otis has that look on his face you know you're dead before he kills you.
Dr. Satan: 8/10
A truly evil head sculpt, Dr. Satan looks like your grandfather, if your grandfather performed brain surgery on helpless people, stringy hair, wrinkled face he looks like he's got one foot in the grave, and he's gonna take you with him!
Captain Spaulding: 10/10
Wow. If you read my review on the Exclusive Spaulding a few months back (My pick for figure of the year) you know I was blown away, and NECA has shown me you can improve on perfection, a slightly different head sculpt to look like he's taking you on his murder ride and giggling all the way. Smeared on greasepaint, stubble, and brown rotton teeth, just like in the movie.
Sculpting (body)
 |
We are here today to mourn the passing of the marrage of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.... |
Otis: 7/10
Not much of a sculpt, The upcoming Otis "Devils Rejects" body under a flowing red robe, but it’s the costume he wears in the movie and it is darn close to movie accurate.
Dr. Satan: 8/10
A scrawny old mans body with an apron than holds TONS of torture tools? How can you go wrong? Scrawny arms with braces and down to his old long toe nailed toes, Creepy.
Captain Spaulding: 9/10
The same body from the Exclusive Spaulding, but now with a red, white and blue coat. Not a bad body, but a new pose would have been nice.
Paint
 |
Everybody loves a clown....if they know whats good for em'! |
Otis: 9/10
Otis has his face painted like he does towards the end of the film, its not too bad, but I did see a couple that the pain was slopped on, I got lucky and found a good one.
Dr. Satan: 9/10
Another wow. In the film we only see Dr. Satan under red light. NECA has him painted a pale skin tone like someone who hasn't seen the light of day in years.
Captain Spaulding: 10/10
Flawless, the beard, the face paint looks almost real, his rotting teeth, his bright costume and his worn yellowing t-shirt underneath are a nice contrast of a dirty old man dressing up for the public.
Articulation
Otis: 2/10
Sadly as nice as the figure looks, articulation is horrible, arms wrist and head, no leg or foot articulation, and the robe he wears is longer than his legs, I actually had to use a small doll stand to keep him up.
Dr. Satan: 4/10
A bit better, but not by much. Articulation at the arms, wrists, elbows, head, and feet. The elbows aren't that great due to his "braces" he has on his arm. And he's very top heavy. He stands, but only with something behind him for support.
Captain Spaulding: 9/10
Best of the 3, Articulation at the wrists, head, waist, arms and feet. With his big clown shoes he has no trouble standing on his own, the only down side is due to the new outfit he has no elbow articulation, but it is a small price for this cool figure.
Accessories
Otis: 8/10
Otis comes with 2 accessories. A book (perhaps a satanic bible?) and a lantern. Both are straight out of the film and fit him well.

Moonwalk into my office Mr. Jackson! I'm sure I can help! |
Dr. Satan: 9/10
Now this is a lot of accessories. Dr. Satan comes with his oxygen mask and tank and at LEAST 20 little torture tools he uses on his "experiments" (i.e. you if you happen to stumble upon him)
Captain Spaulding: 10/10
All the things the Captain needs! A 2 nd set of hands, a monster hand bathroom key, a revolver (If you rob his establishment, Spaulding gives you one warning shot, right between your eyes) a baton, and…
A BAG OF CAPTAIN SPAULDINGS FAMOUS FRIED CHICKEN!! (It just tastes so damn good!)
Outfit
Otis: 8/10
Dressed in his flowing red robe Otis is ready to send you to hell (it’s in his back yard!) Nice looking outfit, my only drawback is the aforementioned length of the robe.
Dr. Satan: 9/10
Dr. Satan has a pair of pants on and a smock with little pouches to hold all of his tools of the trade in. Every tool has a place on his outfit and he looks cool as hell when he's armed for evil.
Captain Spaulding: 10/10
Wearing his Patriotic finest Spaulding looks great, you feel like he's taking you on his Murder Ride! (Kids get in free!)

Ow...the twisty ties are chaffing my wrists! |
Overall
Otis: 7/10
This is the outfit and sculpt I would have chosen for a figure, its Otis at his creepiest, I wish articulation would have been a bit better. Hopefully The "Rejects" Otis will improve on that.
Dr. Satan: 8/10
A nice figure with cool accessories, he's truly evil looking. Again the only drawback is articulation and his ability to stand on his own.
Captain Spaulding: 10/10
Best of the series. Once again NECA captures actor Sid Haig's likeness to a T. This figure looks even better than the Sam Goody/Suncoast Exclusive, and that’s saying something.
