Name: George Lee
Location: Boston , MA |
1- What is it that you collect?
For the past couple of years, action figures. I'm mainly interested in super hero action figures. But I'll buy any figure that catches my eye.
2- What was it that brought you to collecting? And what is that keeps you going?
I used to collect comic books as a kid, mostly Marvel Comics, up until 1990 or so. Although I haven't focused on it much the past few years, close to 10 ten years actually, I'm close to having a complete run of The Avengers #1-300, just missing a handful of issues. Up until a couple of years ago, I wasn't collecting anything really, just a couple of Randy Bowen statues, until I stumbled across some DC Direct action figure images online. That got me hooked. Just seeing how far action figure sculpts and designs have come since I was kid, blew me away. And I'm not even a DC fan.
3- When did you start collecting?
Comic books I'd say in the early 80s until 1990 or so. Action figures a little more than 2 years ago.
4- Why (what you collect) example:Batman, Star Wars, Transformers, etc…?
I've always enjoyed super hero comic books and the sci-fi genre. Collecting action figures that accurately represent characters I grew up reading and watching is just an extension of that fondness.
5- When did you start displaying them?
Immediately. I used to have a lot of the original Star Wars and GI. Joe action figures as a kid (I played with them). I threw them all out when I started collecting comic books. I hung onto only two figures (GI. Joe) from my childhood and a beat up Batmobile. They've more or less always been on display. I bought a few Bowen statues for display and now action figures.
6- How do you get your inspiration to organize and display your collection?
The first time I saw action figures displayed in a glass case that wasn't in a retail store was on this site (eternalcollector.com). Frank's display blew me away. But as you can see, I'm starting small. As for organizing I like to group all the characters in their respective universes.
7- Do you have a favorite character(s) you collect?
Marvel Comics characters are by far my favorite. Any character that was around in the 60s and 70s (even though I wasn't even born yet). But I'm not a fan of all the articulation from Marvel Legends nor am I overly impressed with the sculpts that I've been very selective about what I purchase from them. I buy DC characters that I recognize.
8- Which item in your collection would you say is your absolute favorite and why?
My favorite figure in my collection so far is the original Beast that was part of a boxed set that I picked up on eBay. I think the body sculpt could've been better, but it's vintage Marvel Comics.
9- Which item was the most difficult to obtain? And which one is your prized possession?
The most difficult figures to obtain was Palisades Resident Evil and Moore's Buffy figures for whatever reason. Specifically Chris Redfield from RE and Faith from the Angel series. I'm not sure if I think of any of the figures in my collection as prized as all of them are fairly easily replaceable, all having been released within the last 5 years.
10- What is the oldest item you own? and the one with the most value?
The oldest toy I own is a Batmobile. I'd guess at least 25 years old. Most value, probably my Bowen Captain America statue, which isn't saying much since it cost about $200 retail a few years ago. Can't imagine the value would've increased all that much.
11- What inspires you to purchase an item to add to your collection?
I'll purchase almost any figure that's well sculpted that I like and/or recognize from comic books, movies, tv or video games.
12- Customizing figures and statues has become very big, have you ever purchased a custom figure or statue and have you ever tried making one?
No, never purchased a custom but I would if something caught my eye that was for sale. No, never tried making one.
13- What do you think of the custom Craze?
I think its great.
14- Where do you make most of your purchases from? ebay seems to be a favorite with collectors these days, are you an ebayholic?
Not an eBayholic but eBay was great for picking up figures I missed since I've only been collecting for a couple of years. Also used a couple of online stores. Now that I own all the figures that I want that I missed I pick up new releases at local comic shop, Toys R Us, KB, amazon.com.
15- Is your collection insured?
No not specifically. But I'm looking into it.
16- What is missing from your collection that you hope to one day acquire?
So far, I own everything that I want that is available for purchase or have been made. Just waiting for new releases.
17- What is the usual reaction when people see your collection?
It's mixed. Guys think it's cool. Women aren't impressed. But I'm not stopping.
18- Do you attend conventions for some of your purchases? could you tell us about that?
Haven't been to a convention in over 10 years when I was collecting comic books.
19- Most collectors today go on what they call a toy run, do you participate in that as well? And what are your favorite spots? Do you have a routine?
No, haven't needed to go on a toy run nor do I have any favorite spots. Being relatively new to this, I had to resort to online options for picking up figures I missed and new releases are preordered or can easily be picked up at most retail stores.
20- How do you decide what to take out of the package and what stays sealed?
I open everything. No duplicates. The main reason why I enjoy this more than all my previous years of comic book collecting is not obsessing about condition and being able to handle the merchandise.
21- At what stage do you think your collection will be at 10 years from now, do you think you would have grown tired of it?
In 10 years I hope my collection will be twice the size it is now where I'll need to buy a case like the one Frank has. That would mean that toy companies are releasing characters who have never had a figure before and the sculpt is good enough to buy. I hope I don't grow tired of it in 10 years.
22- What advice would you give someone who just started a collection?
Just have fun with it.
