1- What is it that you collect?
Action figures. McFarlane's non-sports figures mostly but am also way into horror figures.
2- What was it that brought you to collecting? And what is that keeps you going?
An extention from comic book collecting, as cliche`d as that sounds. I had a reawakening of interest in comics primarily due to Spawn and then figures began production and off I went into addiction.
3- When did you start collecting?
1994 when McFarlane started as Todd Toys.
4- Why (what you collect) example:Batman, Star Wars, Transformers, etc…?
Why McFarlane? Like his art I was pulled in by the visuals. I had never seen monsters realized so detailed and adult oriented and at a price that made it realistic to collect.
5- When did you start displaying them?
Well displaying is a relative term. I've hung my figures MOC as soon as I began buying them. In the more purest sense of displaying, since I normally do not open my figures, my display case took shape around the summer of last year when I found a suitable 6 foot glass display case at a antique mall.
6- How do you get your inspiration to organize and display your collection?
Ha! Mostly the hanging figures are organized by date and issue. My display case is a product of my warped mind.
7- Do you have a favorite character(s) you collect?
Spawn and his incarnations mostly.
8- Which item in your collection would you say is your absolute favorite and why?
Hard to pick one, I have quite a fondness for the 18" Mandarin Spawn I acquired.
9- Which item was the most difficult to obtain? And which one is your prized possession?
Many of the Collector's Club exclusives were a pain in the ass to obtain. I don't have one that stands out as my pride and joy, I love them all.
10- What is the oldest item you own? and the one with the most value?
I suppose the original 1994 Spawn line since it's where I began. Since prices fluctuate so much it's hard to say but my Radioactive Homer Simpson is one of the most valuable i'm told.
11- What inspires you to purchase an item to add to your collection?
Im a completist so if I start a series I usually have to have them all. But in general if I think it's cool then I grab it, which unfortunately means i've got a freakin' ton of toys.
12- Customizing figures and statues has become very big, have you ever purchased a custom figure or statue and have you ever tried making one?
No
13- What do you think of the custom Craze?
Very cool but these days since everything under the sun is being made, somewhat unnecessary.
14- Where do you make most of your purchases from? ebay seems to be a favorite with collectors these days, are you an ebayholic?
No, I have bought on Ebay but I like to support my local stores when I can otherwise i'll buy thru good online stores like ToyNK or Bigbadtoystore.
15- Is your collection insured?
Just under standard home owners insurance
16- What is missing from your collection that you hope to one day acquire?
A really hot chick
17- What is the usual reaction when people see your collection?
Oh my god...you're nuts!
18- Do you attend conventions for some of your purchases? could you tell us about that?
Nope, never.
19- Most collectors today go on what they call a toy run, do you participate in that as well? And what are your favorite spots? Do you have a routine?
Yes I haunt the usual hangouts of Comic book specialty stores like Buymetoys and larger retail stores like Walmart and Meijers. No routine per say, if I hear thru channels that a series has hit stores I try to make the rounds time permitting. As i've gotten older i've gotten lazier or has less time so i've begun buying series online and being done with it.
20- How do you decide what to take out of the package and what stays sealed?
Generally ALL my items stay sealed, it's a personal chioce, I think they look cooler that way and I don't lose any parts or break any joints that way. When I can I buy seconds and open those. Now that I have a large display case it's my intention to do more opening and displaying, before space would not allow it.
21- At what stage do you think your collection will be at 10 years from now, do you think you would have grown tired of it?
Depends upon if I get a larger home, if so my collection will be ridiculously hugh. If not my collecting will level off considerably. Will I get tired of it? Hmm some say it's a fad or a lack of maturity but i've collected things my whole life, be it Beer cans, music, comic books, etc. I doubt i'll ever stop, I may shift to statues or artwork if I get richer but collecting cool things is in my blood, so no i'll never stop.
22- What advice would you give someone who just started a collection?
Have fun, that's why we do it. Be prepared for it to take over at least part of your life and if you have a partner they may not understand or get jealous. Keep it in perspective, it's just a hobby afterall.
